The Roll-Call Series
Twelve modules, one a week or one a month, run by the sergeant at briefing. Every shift gets the same content in the same ten minutes, with no overtime, no pulling people off the street, and no PowerPoint.
Every module has the same four parts.
The story
A short, true-to-life scene the sergeant reads aloud: a traffic stop, a squad-room exchange, a night at home.
The talk
Two or three questions for the room. No right answers to recite. The sergeant's guide covers where the conversation usually goes.
The drill
One move to practice on something small this shift, like naming the heat when the radio won't stop.
The question
One question to carry, revisited at the next briefing. That's where the habit forms.
The twelve modules
| # | Module | The idea | The drill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find the Gap | Every response is decided in a gap most people have paved over. | After any flash of irritation, ask: what moved first? |
| 2 | What Moved First | The heat picks the words; the reasons get added later. | Catch one "reason" you added after the fact. |
| 3 | Three Words | Naming a feeling is how you step outside it. | Name it once on a free rep: a stripped bolt, a slow line. |
| 4 | Witness, Not Judge | A feeling is a true report about you and an unreliable witness about the world. | Put one feeling on the stand: what is it actually scared of? |
| 5 | The Call That Follows You | After a hard call the body and the story both keep running. | Box breathing plus one sentence out loud to a partner. |
| 6 | Three Coats | Hard, Careful, Invisible: how we learned to survive being made small. | Notice which coat you reach for when a supervisor walks in. |
| 7 | Your Square of Ground | Accountability isn't blame. It's the part that's yours to move. | On your next gripe, name the one piece that's yours. |
| 8 | Two Questions | What happened? What do I want to do differently? No verdict. | Run it on one small miss before end of shift. |
| 9 | Come-Back Time | Everyone falls. Measure how fast you come back. | Make one repair today with no "but" in it. |
| 10 | Drop to Your Training | Pick three values ahead of time, tied to real people. | Name one person whose standard you'd want in the gap. |
| 11 | Set the Weather | Your state walks into the room before you do. | Walk into one room today on purpose. |
| 12 | The Kitchen Table | The command voice doesn't work at home. | On the drive home, take the coat off before the driveway. |
Sergeant's guide
A script, discussion notes, and "if the room goes quiet" prompts for every module. No prep beyond reading it once.
Short video versions
A three-minute recorded version of each story for nights, weekends, and anyone who missed briefing.
Pocket cards & tracking
Printed pocket cards for every officer, and a simple sheet to log which shifts ran which module.
